THE PEPPERPOT RUM SHOP AND ANTIGUA & BARBUDA TOURISM ASSOCIATION ARE SEEKING ARTISTS, DESIGNERS, AND COLLABORATORS
To conceive and execute artworks for a new public art trail that will feature during 100 Days of Pepperpot Rum Shop, leading up to Antigua & Barbuda’s Art Week in November 2024.
THE ANTIGUAN BUS STOP ART TRAIL
We are spearheading the creation of a public art trail that will utilize existing bus shelters as the canvas for a series of new art installations commemorating the splendor of this great island.
● Introducing a fresh outdoor public art trail spanning across the island utilizing existing bus shelters as the designated sites.
● A select number of artists will be commissioned to produce permanent public artworks, distributed strategically across the island.
● A homage to the cultural richness of Antigua & Barbuda
WHAT WE REQUEST FROM YOU
● A DESIGN CONCEPT OF “CULTURE IN COLOUR” IDEALLY IN THE FORM OF A SKETCH
Please submit visual representations by email outlining your proposed artwork.
● A COMMUNITY ENGAGEMENT PLAN
How do you intend to involve the community in the realization of your concept? How will your artwork reflect the local community's distinctive culture, character, natural surroundings, and heritage?
AFTER SUBMISSION
We will select a number of artists and commission them to create the artworks for the public spaces. We will provide the materials and a stipend for all commissioned artists. The creation process will run from May 2024 – November 2024.
RATIONALE FOR BUS STOPS AS INSTALLATION SITES
Our objective is to:
● Enhance accessibility for Antiguans by siting the artworks in locations frequented or passed by daily—a direct engagement with the populace.
● Enhance the comfort of bus stops for waiting passengers; select stops will be equipped with amenities such as Wi-Fi, seating, and waste receptacles.
● Foster tourism to lesser-explored areas of the island—expanding the visitor experience "beyond the beach."
● Promote local businesses situated near the artworks, encouraging tourists to patronize these establishments, thereby bolstering the local economy.
● Raise awareness of the importance of the island's bus service, a vital lifeline utilized daily by a significant percentage of the population.
BACKGROUND
In partnership with Treehouse Beach Club, Wadadli Kitchen, and the Antiguan & Barbuda Tourist Board, inspired by the acclaimed success of Andi Oliver’s Pepperpot Diaries—a culinary journey set in Antigua & Barbuda—The Pepperpot Rum Shop is an organic manifestation from the narrative of the book. Andi delves into the essence of Antiguan & Barbudian identity, exploring our past, present, and future through the lens of food, activities, and encounters. The 100 day experience will invite guests from all around the world and will feature music, art, wellness, film, food and drink to complement Antigua & Barbuda’s scheduled calendar of events such as Restaurant Week, Art Week, Cricket World Cup and Carnival 2024.
The Pepperpot Rum Shop stands as a homage to the diverse tapestry of Antiguan & Barbudian life.
